Operation Sagar Bandhu: India Extends a Helping Hand to Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka

In the wake of the devastating Cyclone Ditwah, which left a trail of destruction in Sri Lanka, India has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to its neighbours. Upholding its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, India launched Operation Sagar Bandhu, a swift and comprehensive humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mission to support Sri Lanka in its time of need.

At the heart of this operation was the deployment of the formidable aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. From its deck, Indian Navy Chetak helicopters took to the skies, conducting crucial search and rescue (SAR) missions across the cyclone-ravaged areas. These sorties were instrumental in locating stranded individuals and providing essential first-response aid, showcasing the agility and capability of the Indian armed forces in critical situations.

Beyond the immediate rescue efforts, India delivered a substantial 27 tonnes of relief material to assist the affected population. The consignment included vital necessities such as food, clean drinking water, medical supplies, and temporary shelters. This timely aid aimed to alleviate the suffering of the Sri Lankan people and support the local administration’s efforts to manage the crisis.
